Taniya Bhatia is an Indian cricket player who hails from Punjab. She is primarily a wicketkeeper currently trained under coach RP Singh. She was one of the five breakout stars in women’s cricket in 2018 named by International Cricket Council(ICC).
Early Life and Cricket Journey
Taniya Bhatia was born on 28th November 1997 in Chandigarh. Her father works in the Central Bank of India and played cricket at the university level. She has two siblings.
She was trained under Yograj Singh, who is the father of former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh in her early days when she was in DAV senior secondary school. She comes from a family where her father and uncle are cricketers themselves and now her brother is also playing cricket in the U-19 team.
Early Achievements
- She became the youngest girl to represent Punjab in U-19 at the age of 11.
- She became the youngest player to play for the senior Punjab team in the inter-state domestic tournament in 2011 at the age of 13.
- In 2015, she became captain of the U-19 North Zone side in the inter-zonal cricket tournament in Guwahati and scored 227 runs dismissed 10 wickets.
- She joined India A Team at the age of 16.
Selection in the Indian Women’s Cricket Team
She went into depression for a couple of years because of the ups and downs in her initial cricket career but she overcame it with the help of her mother, bounced back, and made her entry into the Indian national team.
Taniya Bhatia International Debut
- Taniya Bhatia made her first international debut in women’s T20 International(WT20I) for India on 13th February 2018 against South Africa Women’s Team.
- She made her debut in Women One day International(WODI) on 11th September 2018 against Sri Lanka.
- She made her international test debut on 16th June 2021 against England.
She was the first women cricketer from Chandigarh to be part of the Indian national women’s team and her jersey number is 28.
